For us girls living in Australia, maintaining beauty at a reasonable cost can be a fairly tricky thing to do considering our inflated prices. To all my international followers, I'd love for you to read this so you can see just how difficult we have it over here!
Let me also just add that everything I write here is in now way an attack on the products or companies! I love the companies and products VERY much, and this is just a little rage about how much it costs us in comparison to everyone else in the world!
I've given you just two examples of basically identical websites, one with the U.S. pricing and shipping, and one with the Australian pricing and shipping.

Firstly, Jurlique. I am in love with Jurlique, and in now way do I actually blame them. (Without getting too much into the whole idea of this, but the price inflation is due to taxes in place by our government, not the company themselves.)
As you can see here on the left, the Herbal Recovery Gel 30ml goes for $48US, whereas on the right, you will see us ladies here in Australia are paying $72AU for this product. Let me just remind you, Jurlique is an Australian company. This product is apparently produced only a few short hours away from where I live. How can this even be justified?
I know that the exchange rate is constantly changing, but as I sit here now, the exchange rate is as follows:
AU Dollar: $100
US Dollar: $95.52
Not a huge difference, certainly not over $20 worth of difference.

My next example for you is MAC. I love MAC. I crave MAC. In no way do I blame MAC for this price difference!
As you can see here, the US website is currently selling their 190 Foundation Brush for $33US. Already pretty expensive for one brush, am I right? But look at the Australian website. $75AU for one brush? That's just laughable.
A few other examples that I have noticed:
Egyptian Magic Cream
$37.20US vs. $72.00AU
Stila "In The Moment" Palette
$39.00US vs. $80.00AU
Smashbox "Be Legendary" Lipstick
$19.00US vs. $28.95AU
O.P.I Shatter
$8.50US vs. $19.95AU
Too Faced Natural Eye Collection
$36.00US vs. $59.95AU
This is just a taste on the kind of price difference us ladies from down under are finding with our products. I'm not meaning at all to attack anyone - the companies, or our government, I just wanted to share just how disappointing these price differences are to us girls who are just trying to be fashion forward with the rest of the world. It's a very expensive task to be up to date with the latest make-up (let alone fashion, but let's not even go there!) and unfortunately there is far too much ignorance for this very troublesome trend to be fixed.
It is unfortunate that our government is also trying to add a tax to online shopping, trying to save our Australian shops. So I really just want to spread this message to all the girls out there who are completely fed up with paying over $70.00 for a single brush whilst someone else out there is paying less than half of that! We shouldn't have to put up with this - especially not when we are TRYING to buy local (ahem Jurlique) and are punished for it!
Just wanting to add again, in NO way am I attacking these brands. Love them, will continue buying them, just unfortunately not from Aussies, I'll be looking overseas for these products.)
So many years fall when I see this jasmine! Im fine with paying a bit more, but when we have to pay double it's not even fair anymore. When I walk into places like Myer and David jones I dont even think about buying anything because I k ow I can get it cheaper somewhere on the interwebs!
ReplyDeleteBrands that aren't even designer have the designer price tag -.- I could ramble about this all day hahah
And I meant tears -.- damn typos!
DeleteI could ramble all day too! Especially with like Jurlique... it's made in Adelaide for god's sake, why are we paying SO much extra for it! :(
DeleteSo many tears for me too! :(
I could definitely ramble on about this all day! The large price differences are so obvious, why? Oh why are we paying SO MUCH more?! Great post!
ReplyDeleteSharleena xx
Oh my gosh me too, I could have written SOOO much more, but I would never stop haha! I hate it :(
DeleteBut thanks hun :) xx
It seriously pains me to read this....I feel like makeup (even drugstore!) is already expensive as it is....I can't imagine paying more than I would for a MAC lipstick for something like a Revlon Lip Butter....outrageous!!
ReplyDeleteI know right! It's so sad! I didn't even mention the Revlon Lip Butters because that would have just sent me into a tizzy :P

So ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteI know :( boo
DeleteNo wonder we are buying from overseas and not supporting Aussie brands when you look at the price difference.. Crazy!!
ReplyDeleteExactly! How can we, when it's so expensive! :(
Deletexx
The price markup is ridiculous! I've resorted to online shopping for a lot of stuff. Goodness, the Stila palette is $80? How laughable! Don't retailers know that people have access to the Internet :p
ReplyDeleteI know right haha! Well they had better not put the tax on online shopping or else I will die! :( haha

Isn't it silly! I'm so sick of these price differences, and have blogged about it too. But what gets me is how some products stay relatively cheap, which diminishes the whole taxes excuse. Like Maybelline Baby Lips here are fairly close to the US price, obviously the taxes aren't affecting that product. But then their foundations are almost 3x the US RRP. More brands in Australia need to follow the lead of companies like Kiehls, who dropped their prices to compete with online sales.
ReplyDeleteWhen I head to the US in a few months, I'll sure be taking an empty suitcase to fill with purchases :)
I know, it makes no sense! I'm sick of it too! :(
DeleteAnd lucky you, I'm so jealous! I'd be taking like three empty suitcases haha! Have lots of fun :)

SO agree... i saw the today tonight report on how Australian goods are generally overpriced, compared to other countries, esp. America...
ReplyDelete:( so unfair.
It really is so unfair, especially with things that are MADE in Australia and we're getting charged more!
DeleteI also noticed that US get free shipping for over $50 for Jurlique but we have to spend over $100... ripped off haha.
Still, sad :(
xx
That is really, really stupid!
ReplyDeleteI follow you dear <3

I know :(
DeleteThanks hun, I followed back :)

I agree! Makes me heartbroken at the price differences :(
ReplyDeletebut I was talking to a friend from America and she said it was probably due to employment and the difference in their wages (which is like half of ours, hence the price difference) but still, it sucks. Nice blog by the way! Love finding Australian beauty bloggers <3
That's true, although it's really sad these days in some stores (especially bigger chain clothing stores) they are completely ripping teens off by only giving them 2 hour shifts and what-not (another issue I won't ramble on about haha)! I think there's a lot of contributing factors, sadly :(
DeleteAnd thanks hun, I'm sorry it took me so long to respond, I didn't even see this comment until today! Forgive me? :)
